Great article! You are right on about Bernie. At the time I thought we had finally found "the one." Keep writing these gems...it helps me keep looking for that "community" you mention, and your frank and honest truths are refreshing. Thank you!
Actually, I did move to Worcester in pursuit of a dream. My dream was to find a city where I could find stable housing, a vibrant arts scene, and a way to allow my passion for local politics to find a useful outlet. Against all odds, I have a decent place to live, musicians and visual artists who I know, and I'm involved with some of the best candidates and elected officials I've ever known. I agree with Bill that there's no cohesive "movement with leaders". However, there is major foundational organizing going on. It's kind of a Tortoise and Hare thing: Movements are flashy and sporadic, organization is slow and steady.
Thanks for writing this fine piece. You're on to something here. It could well be called a sense of place. Americans once had that. Pride in the place where they lived. We're coming back to that and it feels good.
Remarkable article Bill. You’re a true romantic. I was an immigrant kid in the sixties just learning English and watching the whole 60s thing unfold on the granular black and white TV. Flower power, love the one you’re with, power to the people, all supplanted by the ones who slip and slide down the hill, on the blood of the people they kill-Lennon. Keep bringing it and give us some truth. Peace and love.
