Where we go one, Wegovy

Dear Shaun,
Should I ask my doctor about getting Ozempic or Wegovy or another GLP-1? I’m not terribly overweight, but I definitely don’t feel good in my body either. It feels like a cheat code and unearned. Am I overthinking it?

Dear Injection Interested,
It is such an American instinct to feel like you have to work for something. That is what the ruling class teaches all of us. You don’t deserve anything you don’t earn. You MUST pull yourself up from your own bootstraps and those bootstraps BETTER be American made. If you don’t you’re a fraud and you didn’t earn it and you are loser. Yet, who are the folks that are the richest and most successful in this country (for the most part)? It is those with generational wealth. Why do you think we say “nepo baby” with such disdain now? Americans, on the whole, can’t stand someone who just gets something.
Of course there are exceptions. If someone wins the lottery; that’s luck. But who runs the lottery? The ruling class. If someone thinks of a lawsuit before the multimillion dollar company can think of the words to protect them from such suit, we consider them smart and advantageous. But what is it really? Slimy. If someone is good at athletics, that is god given and we bow down to those that are chosen. But how many freak athletes aren’t super-rich and famous? So many. Google Earl Manigault.
Truly, to be American means to be singular and unforgiving and selfish. It doesn’t have to be this way, but it seems as though that is what we reward in larger society. I wish we could reward teachers, doctors and Wal-Mart greeters who wrote a specific song they sing when you walk in the place. I wish we could reward Coney Island Hot Dogs and Beyond Wrestling wrestlers. I wish we could reward the grocery cashier who you have a crush on. They’re not exactly your type, but the gruff in their voice and smell of their breath makes you curious enough that you wait in line just to get checked out by them and in turn give them a little checkout yourself.
You should get the shot if that is what will make you happy. This is the American I want all of us to be. To do things for themselves, like our therapists says we should do. While in turn being happy with our decision so we can be a better person to our neighbor. Maybe you take that GLP-1 and that makes you healthier and want to eat less. You take that money you save and you put that money into buying non-perishables for the Free Fridge. Then those folks eat enough to feel healthy and willing to help themselves more and so on and so forth.
If you are just feeling like a little fatty, like I feel after eating my son’s Halloween candy while watching the Celtics get blown out, then maybe it isn’t for you. Maybe if you just go on a walk or a run or dance to a song your brain chemistry will change enough where you will just feel like your body is right for you. I don’t know, I’m not Richard Simmons or Lauren Graham. All I know is that Donald Trump is at worst a pedophile and at best friends with a lot of pedophiles and that seems way worse in comparison than any self-doubt we all may have. Take solace is that man’s evil, I guess?
