Paul Fullen lost. Again. And not by a little. Perhaps he should go back to drop-box watching.

It's not a cure-all but when we're burnt out our mind often focuses mostly on the bad shit and it can be powerful to find something or someone to consciously feel gratitude for. It doesn't make anything bad go away, it can just help to remind ourselves that not everything is bad, just the bad things are bad. There are some good things too. Kurt Vonnegut suggested something similar here when he said, “And I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.”

I work at WPI (in mental health no less) and I think most folks in the area know at least a little bit about what last year was like for us here. Finding things to be grateful for, even small things, helped me persevere through a pretty awful span of months.

Hang in there Bill. Your writing has been immensely helpful to me as a Worcester resident to understand both the city I live in and the various players that make it what it is.

I think a good first step is to just accept that burnout happens to just about everyone from time to time. Don't overly fret about it - it should move on soon enough. Relax and appreciate the small things in life. But then always remember why you do WSAILI - you're bringing important issues to the attention of people in our community. There are numerous threats - big and small - facing us every day at the local, national, and international levels. Most people feel helpless in the face of these dangers. You have the ability and power to inform and inspire people to understand the need to stop sitting on the sidelines and start stepping up and speaking out too.

Yea honestly I have to say a walk or just lying in the sun helps a lot. Gotta get that vit d. While you’re doing so I recommend listening to music you know you enjoy, or new music recommended to you. You could also listen to a (radiolab) podcast or just the nature.

And take a break! Forcing something to happen is not productive in regards to the quality or your satisfaction of your work.

All the best. We rare non-normative Clarkies appreciate what you do.
